Gov. Shapiro speaks at U.S.-Canada Summit about a cross-border relationship

Gov. Josh Shapiro spoke at the U.S.-Canada Summit in Toronto on Friday to outline his vision for a cross-border relationship.

“While I know the United States hasn’t always felt like a welcoming place for Canadians in the last year, Pennsylvania is proud of the working relationship we have with our northern neighbors,” Shapiro said. “Canada has not only been our country’s closest ally, but the commonwealth’s strongest trading partner. Our economic futures remain connected and I’m committed to strengthening our historic ties to ensure our economies grow, invest in innovation, and welcome visitors from across the border to benefit Pennsylvanians and Canadians alike.”

Shapiro also has met with business leaders, policymakers, and senior Canadian government officials to highlight opportunities in Pennsylvania for investment, infrastructure, energy, and business advantage for international institutions.

Canada is Pennsylvania’s largest international trading partner, and Ontario is Pennsylvania’s leading provincial trading partner. In 2025, Canada accounted for $13.9 billion in exports and $13.4 billion in imports while 812 Canadian business locations supported approximately 32,000 jobs in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania companies engage extensively with Ontario companies in sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and energy.

Approximately 500,000 Canadians are expected to visit Pennsylvania this year, supporting 500,000 jobs and $84 billion in economic activity.
