Steamfitters Local Union 420 awarded $3M grant for building expansion

The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) recently awarded Steamfitters Local Union 420 a $3 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant to support the $17.5 million expansion of Local 420’s training center. Local 420 also was awarded a $5 million RACP grant for the project in 2024.

The project will expand the service training shop, build a second level, and build or renovate classrooms in the existing facility. Improvements also will be made to the exterior, Union Hall, and Union Administrative Offices.

The union offers two, five-year apprenticeship programs, training workers to install, service and maintain complex mechanical systems. Once completed, the expanded facility will allow significantly increase apprenticeship opportunities.

“RACP is a powerful tool that allows us to help finance projects of significant importance in communities across Pennsylvania,” DCED Secretary Rick Siger said. “This $3 million dollar grant is going to be a force multiplier for local workers and businesses,” By expanding Local 420’s facility, they’re going to be able to train more workers — which doesn’t just help meet the needs of local businesses, but also gives more Pennsylvanians access to learn the skills they need to help build major economic development projects.”

Steamfitters Local Union 420 represents 4,900 members in 10 southeastern Pennsylvania counties.
