WAP Sustainability Consulting, an independent accreditation firm, recently validated that Pittsburgh-based PPG’s in-house tools for cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint (PCF) measurement and life cycle assessment (LCA) meet International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.
PCFs measure the total greenhouse gas emissions associated with a product’s life cycle while LCAs evaluate the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life cycle.
The International EPD system, the world’s largest environmental product declaration (EPD) publisher, also recently certified PPG’s EPD process.
EPDs discloses the environmental impacts of a product throughout its life cycle.
“Having third-party verified LCA, PCF and EPD processes enable our customers to utilize trusted sustainability product information for their reporting, procurement decisions, or to qualify for green building certifications,” Shen Tian, PPG global manager of product sustainability, said. “These capabilities play an important role in meeting our goal to be our customers’ first choice partner for paints, coatings and specialty products.”
The verification process enables PPG to significantly shorten the delivery time of EPDs, PCFs and LCAs. The company also plans to make the tools available globally to its employees.
PPG is a paint, coatings and specialty materials company. It serves the customers in construction, consumer products, industrial and transportation markets and aftermarkets.
