Pennsylvania American Water invests $40 million in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties

Pennsylvania American Water plans to invest more than $40 million to upgrade seven dams in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties.

Six dams are in Lackawanna County, and one is in Luzerne County. The projects will begin next year, and work includes rehabilitations and outlet modifications, as well as lowering water levels. Work will allow the dams to continue to meet Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Dam Safety regulations.

While water levels are lowered, fish will be collected and moved to another Pennsylvania American Water reservoir. Fishing will be prohibited.

“In Northeast Pennsylvania, we continue to invest heavily in our dams so that these reservoirs will continue to be reliable sources of water that our customers can count on for years to come,” Tony Nokovich, Pennsylvania American Water engineering project manager, said. “We realize this work could be an inconvenience to those that frequent these reservoirs for fishing, and we encourage patience as we complete these important upgrades.”

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing water and wastewater services to approximately 2.4 million people.

Founded in 1886, American Water employs more than 6,400 and provides drinking water and wastewater services to more than 14 million people in 24 states.
