Nearly 90 percent of Pennsylvania voters support the United States developing domestic energy instead of relying on foreign sources, according to an American Petroleum Institute (API) poll.

Voters were split almost evenly between Democrats and Republicans.

A total of 84 percent of the state’s voters believe producing domestic natural gas and oil could help lower energy costs for American consumers and small businesses, and 83 percent believe it could help the United States maintain a leadership role during a period of global uncertainty.

When asked about current events, 93 percent of survey participants said they were concerned about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, 87 percent said the situation in Europe shows what can happen when nations depend on energy production from foreign sources that have agendas of their own, and 84 percent believe that producing domestic natural gas and oil helps make the United States and its allies more secure against actions by other countries.

“As the second-largest producer of natural gas in the nation, Pennsylvania plays a critical role in providing access to affordable, reliable, and secure energy for consumers here and our allies abroad,” Stephanie Catarino Wissman, API PA executive director, said. “This polling shows that voters here in Pennsylvania support policies that incentivize U.S. production and send a clear message that America is open for energy investment.”
