Pittsburgh-based AlphaLab Health, a healthcare and life sciences accelerator program of Innovation Works (IW) in partnership with Allegheny Health Network (AHN), announced a second cohort of start-up companies that will participate in the program.

Selected competitively to participate in the six-month program, the companies will receive assistance navigating key risk points in the clinical and commercial development of their companies. The companies will also receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment.

“AlphaLab Health wraps entrepreneurs with a network of clinical and business experts who know how to help them succeed in the complex health care system,” said Megan Shaw, managing director for life sciences at Innovation Works. “The program brings together all the strengths of IW and AHN and then adds in mentors, access to customers, clinicians with deep experience and domain knowledge, and other resources that can help these talented founders leapfrog past the challenges they would otherwise face.”

The announced cohort features companies covering diagnostics, therapeutics, medical devises, healthcare IT and packaging solutions.

The cohort is comprised of MindTrace, a company developing technology that allows neurosurgeons to remove brain tumors and seizure-generating tissue, while preserving a patient’s personality and skills; Parcel Health, a company creating medication packaging; Hale Therapeutics, a company creating a consumer-facing device to help people quit smoking; Telling.ai, a company developing smartphone technology that provides users with detailed lung performance through remote respiratory monitoring; Naima Health, an interdisciplinary team developing an app to minimize adverse outcomes in pregnancies, and Spoken, a company that helps patients with language disorders speak again.
