The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently awarded fire departments statewide Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) to purchase personal protective equipment. The Federal Emergency Management Agency will distribute the funds.
The program allows fire departments to obtain emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training. The program has provided nearly $10 billion since it was established in 2001.
This is round four of the fiscal year 2020 grants, which are announced weekly.
Three fire departments in U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright’s (D-PA) district received $127.5 million.
The Honesdale Hose Co. No. 1 will receive $4,285 to purchase 12 face pieces, Hughestown Hose Co. #1 received $47,142 to purchase 15 complete sets of turnout gear, and Ledgedale Volunteer Hose Co. received $76,033 to purchase multiple pieces of equipment.
“For far too long, both paid and volunteer Fire and EMS companies across Northeastern Pennsylvania have seen a decline in personnel,” Cartwright said. “It is imperative we support our first responders, who perform invaluable work for their communities each day, with the necessary equipment they need to do their job and stay safe.”
The Fairmount Volunteer Fire Co. in U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick’s (R-PA) district received $857,142 towards vehicle acquisitions.
