PPG recently opened a facility in Tangier, Morocco, that will produce automotive sealants.

This is the company’s first automotive coatings production facility in Africa. It will produce sealants for Renault Group’s Dacia brand vehicles that are manufactured in Tangier and Casablanca.

The company is assessing the local production of adhesives, sealants, and coatings to supply Morocco’s expanding vehicle production. In 2019, automotive output was approximately 400,000 vehicles. This is four times the production of 2000, according to Policy Center for the New South, a Moroccan think tank. By 2023, output is forecasted to increase to 700,000 vehicles.

“This facility’s startup is an important step in providing local supply for automotive original equipment (OEM) vehicle manufacturers in Morocco,” said Roald Johannsen, PPG vice president of automotive coatings for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. “The country is already one of the largest and fastest-growing vehicle producers in Africa. Vehicle output is projected to increase significantly, with two more production facilities expected to be added by 2030.”

The company is developing automotive adhesives and sealants that allow vehicle manufacturers to meet their noise and vibration reduction, sustainability, light weighting, and electrification goals.

PPG operates in more than 75 countries. Net sales in 2020 were $13.8 billion.
