Rep. Nelson establishes Emerging Technologies Caucus

State Rep. Napoleon Nelson (D-Montgomery) recently established a bipartisan House Emerging Technologies Caucus and began circulating an email last week inviting colleagues to join.

The caucus would educate members and committees, follow the latest policy and regulatory developments, and develop and pass legislation that advances tech innovation while supporting responsible growth for these new markets.

Duties would include providing transparency and creating reasonable regulations to attract and retain entrepreneurs and protect Pennsylvanians.

“Legislatures around the country are recognizing the fast-approaching economic opportunities and regulatory challenges of the emerging technologies space,” Nelson said. “Artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality, autonomous vehicles, and blockchain technology are just a few of the emerging fields that are quickly becoming integral parts of our lives.”

Nelson holds a degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a degree in finance from the Wharton School of Business.

Nelson plans a House Democratic Policy Committee hearing in July to discuss technology and is
working on several bills that address the topic.

“The House Emerging Technologies Caucus is a great example of the forward-thinking mindset we need to stay informed about evolving technology and determine how to best utilize it to serve the needs of all Pennsylvanians,” Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia/Delaware), House Democratic leader, said.

In 2021, it is projected Pennsylvania will spend more than $120 billion on technology improvements.
