Anthony Foxx, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation, was recently appointed distinguished executive in residence at Carnegie Mellon University for the academic year.
In this role, Foxx will use his expertise to help students understand how to bring together technology, policies, and individuals to improve the quality of life for people living in metropolitan areas. He will work with the Public Policy and Metro 21: Smart Cities Institute, the Heinz College of Information Systems, and the College of Engineering.
Foxx also will be a panelist for a smart technology discussion Sept. 14 at the 2018 INTERSECT@CMU Conference.
“It’s an honor to be joining an institution that is at the forefront of using technology and policy to transform city life,” Foxx said. “For years, I have embraced technology and pushed for new rules that govern the latest developments in smart city strategies as seen through the launch of the Smart City Challenge. Foxx served as Secretary of Transportation from 2013 to 2017 and previously was mayor of Charlotte, N.C. His other prior posts include U.S. Justice Department attorney, counsel to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, and a law clerk to U.S. Court of Appeals.
